The best way to prevent damage to your vehicle in a hail storm is to pull it into your garage. The garage itself might take some damage–to the roof and the doors in particular–but it should be sturdy enough to protect your car. However, that might not always be an option. Many people don’t have a garage for their car, can’t park their car in their garage, or may be far away from their garage when the storm starts. So does that mean you are out of luck and will just have to face the damage later on? Not necessarily! Our hail damage repair team in San Antonio has some tips to help you protect your vehicle from hail even when you don’t have a garage.
Protect Your Vehicle From Hail Damage
Get weather alerts on your phone.
Knowledge is power! In this case, knowing when a hail storm is coming empowers you to take steps to protect your car. Sign up for weather alerts on your smartphone through the national weather service or with one of your local news agencies. That way you’ll know when there is a danger of hail and can get an alert when it’s on its way.
Keep heavy blankets in the trunk.
It’s a good idea to keep a blanket or two in your trunk for emergencies (and emergency picnics) anyway. But they can be great for protection in a hail storm, too. When the hail is due to start, use them to cover up your car. You can keep them in place by using binder clips or tying them down with rope. If you are really serious about hail protection, you can also invest in high-tech car covers. In a pinch, your car’s floor mats make great hail protection.
Park next to large buildings.
If you can tell which direction the wind is coming, park on the opposite side of a large building. It’s not a fool-proof method, but a tall building can be the wind break against the storm and prevent the majority of the hail from reaching your vehicle.
Invest in a car port.
If you don’t have a garage at home but you live in an area which receives a lot of hail (hello, San Antonio!), it might be worth investing in a carport. It won’t set you back nearly as much as building a garage and will practically pay for itself after a hail storm or two. There are even DIY kits you can put together yourself for bigger savings.
Keep yourself safe.
Most importantly, keep yourself self in a hail storm. Our hail damage repair team in San Antonio can help repair any damage that’s done to your vehicle, but we can’t repair you. Do what you can to protect your vehicle, but more importantly, get yourself to safety. Remember that flooding often follows a big hail storm, so parking on higher ground and then getting indoors is a good idea.
